Skin smoothing injections in south Devon
The skin naturally consists of structural materials that include collagen and lubricants such as hyaluronic acid (HA), giving us a firm, toned and youthful skin. As the body ages, the quantity of these critical materials naturally declines, resulting in poorer skin quality.
Injection into the skin of synthetic HA and/or natural collagens (ie dermal fillers) or other agents can restore the skin to a more youthful appearance, plumping up deep wrinkles and skin folds, making the skin firmer, as well as by building up and sculpting facial contours.
Following an in-depth consultation with Dr Drucker to assess the best course of action regarding wrinkle-reduction treatment for you, you could be offered injections with either dermal fillers or Botulinum toxin A, whichever is the most appropriate.
Different dermal filler treatments
Dermal fillers are most widely used in treating wrinkles in the face. However, they can also be used for the treatment of ageing hand skin, and also for plumping up and enhancing the shape of lips.
Treatment of lips can be used both to overcome the loss of shape and definition in an ageing person, and to enchance their lushness in a young person, promoting sexual attractiveness.
Most of this page covers the general use of dermal fillers, particularly as they apply to facial skin. To find out about lip enhancement and hand treatment click on the links below:
What are dermal fillers?
Today, the most widely used dermal fillers consist of synthetic HA. Their effects are considered to be non-permanent, but they do last 6-12 months.
Many different types of filler are in use today, but Dr Drucker currently uses just three brands, namely Stylage, Belotero and a brand new synthetic HA filler product called Aliaxin. The first of these is used by Dr Drucker exclusively for lip enhancement, and the other two for facial skin enhancement.
Stylage comes in a range of forms, but for lip enhancement Dr Drucker uses only Stylage Special Lips, a form of Stylage designed specifically for this particular treatment.
As with Sylage, there are several types of Belotero, called Belotero Soft and Balance, Belotero Intense and Belotero Volume, each designed to be used with rather different skin types and conditions, and to achieve slightly different effects.
Again there are several types of Aliaxin, called Aliaxin Shape and Restore, Aliaxin Fine Lines, Aliaxin Global Performance and Aliaxin Essential Volume, again intended for use with different skins and conditions, and each designed to achieve a rather different skin enhancement result.
Botulinum toxin A works in a quite different way to dermal fillers, paralysing and then tending to relax facial muscles, thereby causing the skin to smooth out. As with dermal fillers the result is temporary, lasting a few months. Also like dermal fillers, it comes with several brand names, the most well known of which is Botox.
The pre-treatment consultation will enable both Dr Drucker and you to jointly come to a decision as to which is the best form of wrinkle reduction treatment for you: dermal fillers or Botulinum toxin A.
About facial skin treatment
The first step is for Dr Drucker to take your medical history, to make sure there are no issues in your health that could make this treatment ill-advised. You will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form.
For your personal comfort, Dr Drucker will often apply an anaesthetic cream 30 minutes prior to injection. All three fillers described above also contain an anaesthetic (called lidocaine), and at the time of and following injection Dr Drucker also applies ice to the injection sites, further ensuring a painless treatment.
The effects of dermal fillers are immediate, while those of Botulinum toxin A take several days to develop. You will be able to return to normal daily activities (except sport) immediately.
Depending on the site and depth of the wrinkles to be treated, the most appropriate product will be chosen and injected into the right skin level. The treatment session lasts about 30-60 minutes.
You may experience temporary bruising, redness and swelling after your treatment. This can be disguised with a concealer.
In very rare cases, an allergic reaction can occur following an injection. I will discuss this fully with you prior to your treatment.
All dermal fillers produce immediate results, while Botulinum toxin A injections take several day to start to show skin changes.
None of the treatments is completely permanent, the effects of fillers lasting 9-12 months, and those of Botulinum toxin A 3-4 months.
The treatment will need to be repeated if you want to maintain your results.
